Electrical Contractor for Schools
Classrooms, gyms and corridors, upgraded in the weeks when the students are gone.
A school's calendar is its construction schedule. Most electrical work that disrupts a classroom has to fit into summer, winter break or spring break, and the weeks before the first day back are the busiest of the year for anyone working in a school.
Education is one of the building types ThreeCo has worked in recently, alongside the rest of our commercial work across the Kansas City metro.
What is electrically different about a school
Classrooms need even, glare-free light on desks and whiteboards, and many older buildings are still lit by fluorescent troffers that flicker and hum. Gymnasiums need high-bay fixtures with guards, because a ball will hit them, and enough light for the bleachers as well as the court.
Corridors, stairs and exits carry emergency and egress lighting that has to work when the power does not. Those fixtures are part of the building's life-safety system, and a lighting upgrade has to keep them working and compliant.
- Classroom LED retrofits and occupancy sensors that turn lights off in empty rooms
- Gymnasium high-bay lighting with ball guards
- Emergency and egress lighting in corridors, stairwells and exits
- Added circuits for technology carts, labs and kitchens
Planning around the calendar
Because the work windows are short and fixed, the scope, the fixture order and the schedule are best settled months before the break. Fixtures that arrive in the second week of summer leave half the window unused.
Projects run by a general contractor
Larger school projects are often bid and run by a general contractor. ThreeCo subcontracts for general contractors on commercial work, so a district's GC can bring us in for the electrical scope.
Smaller jobs — a failing gym fixture, a classroom that needs more receptacles for laptop carts, a kitchen circuit that keeps tripping — do not always have to wait for a break; they can be planned around the school day.

FAQ
Questions from education owners and managers
Can a classroom lighting retrofit be finished over summer break?
It depends on the size of the building and on when the fixtures can be on site. The earlier the scope is agreed and the fixtures are ordered, the more of the break is spent installing rather than waiting.
Do gym lights need anything special?
Gymnasium high-bays are usually fitted with wire guards so a ball cannot break them, and they need to light the bleachers as well as the floor. Retrofitting them means lifts on the gym floor, which has to be protected.
What happens to emergency lighting during a retrofit?
Emergency and egress lighting has to keep working. Where a retrofit touches those fixtures, the replacements need to provide the same emergency function, and that is checked before the building reopens.
How does a school start a project with you?
Start with Watt, the chat button on this page, and tell it the building and your break dates. You can also call (816) 730-9100.
Have a break window coming up?
Tell Watt the building and the dates. The sooner the scope is set, the more of the window is work.
