Electrical Contractor for Municipal and Public Spaces

Parks, paths and public buildings, wired to survive weather and heavy use.

Public work is built for people the owner will never meet. A park path is used at dusk by joggers, families and cyclists; a public building is open to everyone. The lighting has to be dependable, hard to damage, and simple for a parks or facilities crew to maintain.

ThreeCo did the pathway and landscape lighting for the Berkley Riverfront Park Path in Kansas City, one of the city's most-used public spaces. Municipal work is one of the building types we have worked in recently.

Outdoors, in all weather

Path and park lighting lives outside year-round: rain, freeze-thaw, river wind and the occasional mower. Fixtures, bases and connections need to be rated for wet locations, underground runs need to survive the ground they are buried in, and the light has to fall on the path rather than into the sky or the neighbors' windows.

Public lighting is usually switched by photocell or time clock, so it comes on reliably at dusk and nobody has to remember to turn it on.

Public buildings

City halls, community centers and maintenance facilities are offices, gyms and garages under one owner. They share the same needs as any commercial building of their type, with the added expectation that the work is documented clearly enough for the next crew who maintains it.

Public budgets are set a year or more ahead, so a municipal lighting upgrade often starts as a scope and an estimate used for planning, long before the work is let. A clear fixture list and a written scope make that budget line easier to defend.

Bids and general contractors

Municipal projects are often bid publicly and run by a general contractor. ThreeCo subcontracts for general contractors on commercial projects, so the GC carrying a public job can bring us in for the electrical scope.

FAQ

Questions from municipal owners and managers

Have you lit a public path before?

Yes — the Berkley Riverfront Park Path in Kansas City, with pathway and landscape lighting built for the weather, the foot traffic and the wind off the river.

How is park lighting usually switched?

Most public outdoor lighting is controlled by a photocell, a time clock or both, so it turns on at dusk and off on schedule without anyone flipping a switch.

Do you bid public work directly or through a general contractor?

Tell us how the project is being procured. ThreeCo subcontracts for general contractors on commercial projects, and we can talk through a direct scope where that is how the work is let.

What should a city or parks department send to get a number?

The site, a plan or map of what needs lighting or power, and how the project is being procured. Start with Watt, the chat button on this page, or call (816) 730-9100.
